English is supposed to be an easy language to learn, however Spanish speakers have problems with some pronunciations. In this section you can find the common mistakes which you can have.

Pronunciation Problems

In order to get a phonetic transcription for a word or a text, here you have a useful tool:

  • One common mistake is that some people tend to add an "e" at the beginning of words that start with "s", such as "eschool" or "eSpanish". These words are often difficult to pronounce correctly for Spanish speakers because there is no vowel preceding the ‘s’, like in Spanish language.
  • Words written with “b” and “v” are mostly pronounced identically, making this perhaps the most common spelling mistake.
  • Spanish speakers often have trouble distinguishing between words like "beat /biːt/" and "bit /bɪt/", that is because Spanish language does not have a distinction between short and long vowels.
  • The “ch” in “cheese /tʃiːz/" may also be confused with the “sh” in “she’s /ʃiːz/", because the latter sound does not exist in Spanish. Spanish speakers does not make a difference between a smooth sound "ch" and a more explosive one "sh".
  • The pronunciation of the phoneme /θ/ (thin /θɪn/) does not exist in Spanish and some speakers tend to pronounce it like a /ð/ (this /ðɪs/).
  • Also, some Spanish speakers pronunce the phoneme /θ/ (thank /θæŋk/ like /s/ (sank /sæŋk/.)
